In volume V the United States is thrust into a Civil War, our greatest challenge since the Revolution. This was a time when the future of the country hung in a balance. It was the worst of times for what was still a young republic. But, in the end the Union was saved and the country grew stronger and with more influence on the world stage. The American conscious was developing with the end of slavery and becoming a society that truly believed that “all men are created equal.”And finally, we end with the Indian Wars as tragic as they were. American Indians fought for their own freedom and liberties as we did with England. After these wars the healing could begin.
